NAICS is the standard system used by federal statistical agencies to classify business establishments across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It replaced the older SIC system in 1997 and is revised on a five-year cadence.

Structure

NAICS is hierarchical to six digits: sector (2), subsector (3), industry group (4), NAICS industry (5), and national industry (6). The first two digits identify one of 20 sectors, from 11 — Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting through 92 — Public Administration.

Mappings

Each NAICS code maps approximately to one or more schema.org industry types and to UNSPSC segments. The mapping is many-to-many and not officially endorsed.
